London

Hallowe'en Party

London is introduced as the setting of Hercule Poirot’s flat and as the urban point of reference for the events at Woodleigh Common. It is both his immediate home base and the measure of the distance between his familiar surroundings and the case that urgently draws him elsewhere.

Poirot’s London Flat

At his London flat, Poirot is waiting for an evening with his friend Solly. They had planned to revive their continuing argument over the real culprit in the Canning Road Municipal Baths murder. Poirot has assembled pieces of evidence for a theory he considers somewhat far-fetched; he expects Solly to bring forward equally fantastic beliefs, which he intends to challenge through sanity, logic, order, and method.

The plan is interrupted before Poirot answers the telephone. He already expects Solly to cancel: when they met earlier that day, Solly was suffering from a chesty cough and infectious catarrh. Poirot recognizes that avoiding the illness is sensible, but the cancellation leaves him expecting a dull evening. The flat is thus established not only as his residence but as a place where detective work and convivial argument ordinarily meet.

An Urgent Call

A female caller reaches Poirot in London and says she had expected him to be out. She explains that she urgently needs to get hold of him, describing the frustration of needing someone quickly and having to wait. The call changes the evening’s direction: the anticipated private debate is displaced by a request whose urgency is apparent before its circumstances are fully explained.

London as a Point of Reference

The caller identifies Woodleigh Common as the place she wants to explain. She estimates that it lies about thirty to forty miles from London, near Medchester, and describes it as an ordinary residential community with some pleasant houses, newer building, and a good school nearby. Its residents can commute to London or to Medchester. London therefore anchors the account geographically: Woodleigh Common is close enough to belong to its commuting orbit, yet distinct enough to require Poirot to turn his attention from his flat to events elsewhere.
